Love Stack soaps and continuing sale

We've recently updated our Etsy site with some new heart shaped soaps. These things are so cute! There are three to one package and they're all a different size. What a great way to try 3 scents at a time as well! Hop on over to our store to see those as well as take a peek at what we've got left of our clearing out sale. Once those are gone - they're gone. We may bring back some of the fragrances, but they'll be reinvented. Stay tuned. ;)

CPSIA - who does it affect?

While Jadewicks does not focus on children's items, we've been carefully watching what has been going on with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). What started as a means to make sure our children are safe from harmful products and toys is venturing into a complete obliteration of the small business and their owners. Not only will this affect smaller businesses, but larger businesses that focus on used goods (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc).

There are many companies that are not exempt from the new law. What will happen to these stores that cannot afford the testing? What will happen to the items?

Etsy feature - Recycled Ideas and her felted Ornamonkeys

What exactly is an OrnaMonkey?

Well, they're monkey ornaments made from felt to resemble real species of monkeys. One monkey is released each month. Each species is chosen for its charismatic face, interesting social habits or other oddities which make the species unique among primates. Each monkey is collectible and comes with a dated bio-blurb about the species and its conservation status. The felt is eco-spun felt that is 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. I especially love the fact that her felt is completely recycled!

She currently runs a Monkey of the Month Club which gives people a different OrnaMonkey each month for a year. I'm going to take a bit from Holly, but here are the details on how to score a year's worth of monkey's for yourself!

Membership spaces become available in November and are offered at a discount. Each member who signs up before December 31 will receive twelve 2009 OrnaMonkeys for only $99 plus S&H ($168 if purchased individually), a savings of more than 40%. Species to be included are: lemurs, macaques, marmosets, langurs, tamarins, titi monkeys and more. The shipping and handling fee covers the cost of shipping all 12 monkeys ($2 per monkey).

Well, these cute little felted creatures you can find in an Etsy shop run by Holly. She happens to spend her days conducting interdisciplinary research on primate behavior. And when she isn't busy doing that, she's creating other items that carry this love for primates over into the crafting world. Take a look at her cute shop!

The first ever EGCG (Etsy Green and Clean Guild) Swag Bags will be offered in our team shop. There are 19 members (Jadewicks included) who participated in this bag that carries varying bath and body items in good size samples. Plus, we've added a fun twist as well. More Iowa fun

Well, the past few days I've been prepping for a craft show I decided upon last minute. I didn't think I had enough to make it worthwhile, but of course I changed my mind and will have some new items ready to boot!

For any Iowa eyes, make sure you have time to stop out and see me and other wonderful artisans for Craft Saturday at the Vaudeville Mews. You can check out the Craft Saturday site for more info regarding vendors. The farmer's market will be taking place as well, so things will be busy! Fall has started and I'm excited to get it goin'. Too Cute Iowa - Etsy finds

I can safely say that for the longest time I never considered myself to be an 'Iowan'. I was born in Arizona and spent a good portion of my young life in the southern part of the US. My father was originally from Iowa and in the middle of fourth grade, we (my siblings and myself) were plucked from our sunny, warm and exciting home to a cold, dreary and not so exciting one. I still remember being unfazed by the scenery. More hills? Ho hum.

Fast foward to about 15 years later and you've got a girl with a different tune. I see potential. What Iowa lacks in what others may consider natural beauty and excitement, it makes up for in hospitality and charm. I can't say this for everyone, but I've never been somewhere else that you'll find hellos and waves from strangers in the smallest of towns. Welcoming is the best term I can think of. And now I'm one of them.

With that said, I couldn't help but post about these CUTE Iowa pouches. Loving your state in a subtle (or not so) way? She makes them custom as well. So if you're not Iowan, contact her about making one in your state. Take a look at her shop - Monster Fashion. Lots of neat vintage-inspired items and I'd almost go as far as saying she's adding contemporary flair. Love it!

Don't forget to check out the tree brooches while you're there. Adorable! I've got one myself already and it's just darling. I can definately stand by her work. I've also gotten a custom bag made and was lucky enough to be able to pick out everything and I mean EVERYTHING. You just can't replace the excitement that comes with options. :) The bag I have you can see to the left. Excellent work and highly recommended.

American Steel - Timothy Adam Designs

Normal day browsing Etsy forums and I run into some helpful tips to make the most of a shop's viewing potential. Smart, this guy. He got me to check out his blog. He also got me to be added to his monthly drawing for his steel necklaces and even got me to make a comment for an added chance to do so. All with one post. Pretty successful if you ask me. Might I add that his stuff is actually really cool to boot?

He uses steel in all of his pieces and I really love the cherry blossom tree earring holder. Unfinished looking, yet interesting and functional, I can see it carefully holding my growing collection.

As a previous interior design major, I couldn't help but browse his collection of furniture. With the popularity of wood and acrylic today, it was nice to see metal take its place again. I really enjoy the look of this steel pipe bench/table. Again, I love its unfinished look.

There is a large range of items you can find in his etsy shop. Nice range in price too. Take a moment to check him out. Who knows, he may suck you in too.

Why do they tempt me?

I'm an avid Food Network junkie and was watching the show, Road Tasted. Psst, it's got Paula Deen's two grown sons as hosts (cuties!). In any case, they were visiting Atlanta, GA for this episode. One of the shops they stopped by grabbed my eye - Via Elisa. They make authentic and fresh pasta daily. SCORE!

The owner showed the boys (and viewers) how they make their spinach-filled ravioli.*sidenote?* She learned how to make authentic pasta from a chef that cooks for the king. It's gotta be delicious right? :) They import cheeses from Italy on a regular basis. They used ricotta for this recipe and my goodness did it look divine!

After they made the filling, she proceeded to tell them that she only uses organic flour and fresh free-range hen eggs from a local farmer for her dough. I didn't realize this was all it took to make pasta dough, but I'm intrigued!

She then went to a machine that pressed the dough out into two thin sheets which were then wrapped around dowels to be trasported to the ravioli maker. It was an interesting process that gave me a look into the business as well as a feel for the simplicity and ingredient care that goes into the food. And you don't have to be a monarch to appreciate it!

If you've seen Road Tasted, you know that the businesses they spotlight have capabilities of sending their food to wherever you may live. I immediately went to foodnetwork.com and searched for this new (to me) pasta maker. I'm gonna have to grunt a bit as I was expecting to be shown this information on the front page, but I had to do some digging to find some info on it. Not very user-friendly foodnetwork!

In any case, I did find her website and am willing to share my food find with you. I'm a bit depressed because I was teased with this pasta on tv and told I'd be able to order it online. Well, the website has a link to order it, but it gives you an error.

I guess my only recourse is to blog about it and hope that they fix it soon. I've already messaged the web developer regarding the issue, so I hope that it is fixed soon! In any case, happy eats! ...eventually.

Christmas in July on Etsy

Can you believe I am so incredibly impressed with this shop that I'm blogging about her before saying anything regarding Jadewicks? *smile*
